Today it was reported in Tokyo that Takashi Uchiyama has officially retired. Uchiyama, 37, had told reporters last weekend that he would announce his decision this week.

Uchiyama (24-2-1 20 KOs) had made 11 successful defenses of the super featherweight championship and held the title for over six years before finally losing to the current champ, Jezreel Corrales.

In his retirement, Uchiyama had mentioned before of possible plans to open a new gym. He may also continue doing some color commentary as we saw him doing at the Taguichi fight this past weekend for TV Tokyo.

A press conference scheduled for later will take place in Tokyo. Stay tuned for quotes.
