In a fight with as much anticipation as Danny Garcia’s last bout with Samuel Vargas, Shinsuke Yamanaka toyed with and dropped Carlos Carlson five times in route to a 7th round stoppage. The odds makers had Yamanaka as a 33/1 favorite against the young Mexican who had never even fought a 12 round fight before. He wouldn’t get to see the 12th as he was in way over his head with the 34 year old veteran.
The win was Yamanaka’s 12th successful defense of his WBC bantamweight title, one shy of the all time Japanese record of 13. You’d hate to see him get to such a privileged milestone fighting bums and kids. I hope Teiken Promotions can pair their prized boxer with someone who presents more of a challenge to the champion next time around.
