It was announced earlier today that Kell Brook will indeed defend his IBF welterweight championship against tough Earl Spence. The fight will take place May 20th in Brook’s hometown of Sheffield, England.

Brook (36-1 25 KOs) was advised to move up to light middleweight and vacate his belt rather than defend, as Spence(21-0 18 KOs) is a very high risk and low reward type of opponent. Brook had wanted a domestic pairing with Amir Khan but again Khan balked. Spence has been the mandatory for a shot at the title since last August.

Expect the Spence fight to be highly competitive. The winner could be in line for a unification with the winner of Thurman – Garcia among other possibilities. No word yet on an American cable provider as HBO worked on Brook’s last fight while Spence is aligned with the PBC/Showtime family.
