After the somewhat surprising conclusion last night that saw a new WBC super featherweight champion crowned in Miguel Berchelt, winning promoter Zanfer quickly switched gears in determining the immediate future for their other top rated 130 pounder, Orlando Salido.
Speaking to No Sparring, Juan Carlos Torres of Zanfer said Lomachenko was indeed the target for Salido now that Vargas had lost, ending any immediate hope of a rematch for their 2016 fight of the year that ended in a draw.
Noting the ripe division filled with exceptional talent that can be mixed and matched in any which way, Torres seemed confident that Salido (43-13-4 30 KOs) will be paired in a good fight that fans will appreciate no matter the opponent.
Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1 5 KOs) has only one loss on his record that came at the hands of Salido and would love the chance to avenge that occasion. Top Rank, Lomachenko’s promoter, has mentioned several times that they’d like the Salido fight for Lomachenko. Frustrated with Salido’s desire to wait for the outcome of the Vargas fight, Top Rank has also been in contact with Panamanian thumper Jezreel Corrales who holds the WBA version of the super featherweight championship, though no deal has been made as of yet.
A date in April is tentatively being held by HBO for Lomachenko that could very well see Salido standing in the opposite corner.
