Golden Boy boss Oscar de la Hoya announced to media officials today that Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 6th will indeed see Canelo Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on HBO PPV. The weight as reported by multiple sources will be held at 164.5lbs, an unusual half a pound setting for such a prolific fight.
While the site of the fight is still yet to be determined, the new T- Mobile arena in Las Vegas is reportedly the leading candidate.
Canelo has never officially fought above the middleweight limit though he regularly weighs in over 170lbs on fight night. When he beat Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleweight strap the bout was contested at the middleweight minimum 155lbs. For over a year Canelo and his Golden Boy team have rejected fighting lineal middleweight champ “Triple G” because they said Canelo hadn’t yet grown into a middleweight frame. It begs the question of why now at this weight if not against Golovkin?
This matchup putting two of Mexico’s biggest names up against each other is nonetheless very intriguing and will be very enticing to watch. This fight along with Triple G’s fight in March against Daniel Jacobs are great preludes to an eventual clash between the two should the fight get made for September.
Before we get to that hypothetical fight, I honestly wouldn’t put it past Chavez Jr. to score a surprise KO as he should be the bigger man come fight night.
