Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez is due to defend his newly won WBC Super Flyweight title this spring, presumably on the undercard of Golovkin-Jacobs in New York City at Madison Square Garden. His opponent however remains to be seen.
Smart money has a rematch with Carlos Cuadras (35-1-1 27 KOs) as the likely fight we’ll see. Chocolatito isn’t happy with the money HBO is offering him and has yet to agree to any deal. An immediate rematch is being allowed by the WBC who like the rest of the boxing world, loved the first fight and wouldn’t mind a second helping. If however that fight doesn’t come to fruition then the WBC has said they’d mandate a fight between their highest ranked fighter who happens to be Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (41-4-1 38 KOs). That wouldn’t be a bad fight for fans either.
The last option in my opinion would be the best. Naoya Inoue (12-0 10 KOs) just finished off skilled Japanese competitor Kohei Kono. Inoue is ranked #8 by No Sparring on the P4P list while Gonzalez is ranked numero uno. A fight between two undefeated top 10 P4P champions is rare indeed. Boxing fans were lucky enough to see two top 5 P4P fighter’s last month when Andre Ward scored a UD against Sergey Kovalev. An Inoue – Gonzalez clash would offer a lot more punches than Kovalev-Ward and probably see a KO finish.
Both Gonzalez and Inoue are promoted by Japanese outfits, with Gonzalez a part of Teiken and Inoue with Ohashi. The fight would seem to be an easy make though with Gonzalez paired with HBO and his high purse demands, it remains elusive to this point.
