After an extremely slow and uncompetitive year for boxing, the summer is starting to heat up with what boxing fans hope will be a more exciting second half of 2016. Here are the highlights of June:
Keith Thurman scored the biggest win of his career with a unanimous decision victory over fellow top 5 welterweight Shawn Porter in a fight of the year candidate. Lets hope we see both fighter’s again soon with Thurman preferably in a unification fight against one of the division’s other champions.
Chris Eubank Jr. did little to impress as he showboated and eventually TKO’d his mismatched opponent Tom Duran. A deal is expected to be announced soon for him to face the division’s top dog “Triple G” Gennady Golovkin.
George Groves storms back into the super middleweight division with a tough win over Martin Murray who couldn’t handle his extra pounds as he transitioned from middleweight.
Fransisco Vargas gets the top spot honors in a loaded super featherweight division, though his fight was scored a draw with countryman Orlando Salido. Jezreel Corrales is ranked number 2 because he beat Takashi Uchiyama- who fell out of the top 5- but was ranked number 1.
