Today multiple outlets reported that IBF welterweight title holder Kell Brook and his team were in negotiations with Top Rank and WBO welterweight titleholder Jessie Vargas for a summer unification fight. This news comes on the heels of No Sparring reporting that this fight would be great for both boxers. You can read that update here.
Kell Brook has been angling for a fight with countryman Amir Khan for the better part of two years while Vargas has been looking for a rematch with Timothy Bradley after a close ending to their match last year. With both of their preferred options out the window, boxing fans will be given a real treat if this fight actually gets made.
The fight would be staged in England, according to reports, and comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed the career of Kell Brook. Brook hasn’t fought outside of England since he won the IBF title against Shawn Porter nearly two years ago.
A win would be monumental for either boxer as they both could use the title as a unified champion for leverage in securing bigger fights for bigger money …say against the likes of Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley or even a Danny Garcia or Keith Thurman.
