With rumors swirling about the status of the WBO welterweight belt- once again, it seems Jessie Vargas may be getting his wish…errr part of it. Last summer Vargas was close to knocking out Timothy Bradley in the closing seconds of the 12th round. With the referee mistaking the ten-second warning for the bell he stopped the fight, allowing Bradley to escape with the decision and the WBO belt. Vargas has been calling for a rematch ever since.
Sadam Ali for his part has been the number one contender and inline for a a shot at the belt for over a year. He was paid a nice step-aside fee to allow a Bradley-Rios fight last month to go ahead for the belt. Now he’s not stepping aside but it seems Bradley isn’t going to face him.
The word is a possible Bradley-Cotto fight may be in the works for next summer, a fight with a lot more money in it than a bout with the little known Ali. In the case that Bradley doesn’t face Ali and does in-fact face someone else, he’ll be stripped of the WBO belt which will be up for grabs in Ali’s next match.
While Vargas might not be getting the rematch with Bradley for the WBO title, it seems to be a very real possibility he’ll get the call to face Ali. This should be a good scrap.
