I know we still have a few weeks left in the calendar year and there’s still a couple fights left on the docket but I think it’s safe to say that Takashi Miura and Francisco Vargas put on a display that’s worthy of the fight of the year #FOTY honor.
Takashi came in known as the “Mexican Killer” or the “Mexican Assassin” depending on who you ask, for defeating every Mexican fighter he ever faced. That only motivated Vargas who came out strong and even took a wild knockdown and a vicious cut before he found his knockout punch that ended it in the 9th round.
A fantastic showing that was the lead in to the Cotto-Canelo matchup on HBO PPV had everyone cringing, trying not to blink, and cheering at the final bell. This fight cements the super featherweight division as the most exciting in all of boxing.
Vargas can either take a rematch with Miura or he has the option of the long undefeated champion, also from Japan, Takashi Uchiyama who was Miura’s lone victorious foe before Vargas. Nicholas Walters, Javier Fortuna, and the winner of a third Roman Martinez/Orlando Salido fight are also dope options for the new WBC champion.
