Fresh into the summer season, not typically reserved for mega-matches like spring and fall, we’ve just seen a major shift in the rankings with just such fights. More to come next month with a huge brawl between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara set to take place in Las Vegas. Here are some of the highlights since our last update:
**Last weekend Miguel Cotto made a splash with his first middleweight bout in defeating undisputed champion Sergio Martinez. The win makes Cotto the first Puerto Rican to win a championship in four different weight classes. Cotto has taken over the championship spot at 160 in the rankings.
**Carl Froch two weekends ago knocked out rising star George Groves and in doing so properly cemented himself as the #1 ranked super middleweight, behind champion Andre Ward. The fight was showcased on massive proportions as Wembley Stadium was filled to its capacity with some 80,000 spectators. Groves moves to #3 in the rankings as he remains a tough contender with newfound experience to grow from in his still young career.
**Sam Soliman exercised his demons and decisively beat IBF champion Felix Sturm. His win highlights the very active middleweight division. At age 40 Soliman will look to snag another high profile fight before calling it in for good on his career. He’ll look at the GGG/Geale winner as an option but probably will have a better chance at landing Martin Murray.
**Nonito Donaire successfully enters the featherweight division though on precarious grounds. Botched calls by the referee left Donaire with the win and the WBA title against Simpiwe Vetyeka. A rematch will hopefully take place in the fall.
