WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has been given the go ahead on facing former champion Daniel Geale on July 26th at Madison Square Garden. He had been ordered by the WBA to face “number one contendor” Jarrod Fletcher. Fletcher has neither been a champion nor faced the level of competition as Geale. HBO has already said a Golovkin/Fletcher fight would not be televised but it would air a bout with Geale.

While no official announcement has been made as of yet, Boxing Scene reported that the WBA will make “GGG” their Super Champion. This designation gives him more leeway in which opponents he chooses.

GGG had been scheduled to return on the same date against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at 168lbs. Contract negotiations broke down between Chavez Jr. and his promoter Top Rank so the fight was never made.

GGG has expressed his desire to unify the division. Defeating Geale, a native Australian, could be an attractive segue to newly crowned IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman who was born in Melbourne. On the flip side, if Geale defeats GGG, an all Aussie showdown to unify two of the division’s belts would be a nice draw.

HBO has showcased GGG on its network several times. GGG in turn has delivered powerful knockouts and ran through every opponent placed in front of him. His record now stands at 29-0.

Geale is 30-2 and coming off a win after losing his IBF title last summer. The IBF title went from Geale to Darren Barker; Barker lost (and retired after) to Felix Sturm; Sturm previously lost it to Geale-this time he lost to Soliman. No doubt Geale wants to be champion again. Defeating GGG and then Soliman looks to be his one path to the undisputed circle. GGG meanwhile would likely look to face the winner of this weeks Sergio Martinez (undisputed middleweight champion) vs Miguel Cotto affair at Madison Square Garden should he get by the determined Geale.

The middleweight division may be the hottest division in boxing. It picks up steam with the announcement of GGG vs Geale this summer. Stay tuned.
